Causes of Baldness, Pattern
Causes of pattern baldness are genetic, but are influenced and controlled by hormonal factors. Men castrated at a young age donít develop pattern baldness. Estrogen (a female hormone) may be protective in women, because hair loss rarely begins before menopause.
Causes of Alopecia Areata
The cause of this disorder is unknown. Hereditary or emotional factors may influence the hair loss. The autoimmune system may become self destructive. This disorder may be seen in association with thyroid disorders or pernicious anemia.
Signs and Symptoms of Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata produces sudden hair loss in circular patterns without pain or itching. Sometimes the condition can lead to total hair loss (alopeica universalis).
Signs and Symptoms of Alopecia Neoplastica
If you have androgenetic alopecia, you may experience hair loss as early as your teen years. For men, this type of baldness is typically varcharacterized by hair loss that begins at the temples and the crown. The end result may be partial or complete baldness. Women with androgenetic alopecia usually have hair loss limited to thinning at the front, sides or crown. Complete baldness rarely occurs in women.

Due to the hair being so brittle in this disorder, once it emerges from the skin it is often fractures. This leads to short, sparse hair appearance. There is often photosensitivity of the skin. Cataracts may develop in the eyes. There may be problems with the nails producing onchodystrophy.
